HISTORY

According to the tales, the history of Rome began on 21 April, 753 BC, when two brothers Romulus and Remus decided to set up a new town. Choosing the right place for the city, they had a quarrel, and Romulus killed Remus in a fight. After that he founded a settlement where he wanted and named it after himself. The founder of Rome became its first ruler, having laid off the basis of statehood. At first, everyone could become a citizen of Rome, if he or she wanted to, and there were a lot of such people, but mainly strong and healthy men. At that time ancient Romans had problems with female population, there was a lack of women. And it led to the famous rape of the Sabins: having invited people from neighbor tribes to celebrate with them, the citizens of Rome suddenly attacked their guests and captured many women. But they managed to avoid a war with the offended Sabin men among other because already at that time Romans were considered to be serious, well-trained and disciplined warriors. So their neighbors only had to put up with the situation.

Rome started its development on a rather ordinary location – it was an undistinguished lonely spot, and while its inhabitants were suffering from poverty, an Etruscan city, called Veii, prospered right next to Rome. It had high aggers and solid buildings, and the trade in Veii was extensively developed. Even the dead Etruscans were buried not anyhow, but in stone tombs. At that time Romans were living in separated communes on hillslopes, and there was a cemetery in the place, where later a great empire would arise. But already during the rule of the Tarquin dynasty all the poor Roman villages merged in quite a big city, that started a military expansion to surrounding lands. If the neighboring tribes had joined their forces, they could have easily chilled the hot-tempered Romans, but the members of the Etruscan League didn’t want to limit their own authorities even in the face of a real danger. And as the result of such policy Rome managed to conquer Etruscans, though their cultural and economic development was much higher.
