Due to unbending confidence in his right and integrity, Cato made a lot of enemies, but even they they paid tribute to his oratorical talents. In his speeches on various topics, he always added that Carthage must be destroyed at the end. Cato the Elder went down in history as a symbol of the Roman urgency and constancy to purpose. Caesar, Gaius Julius (100-44 BC) — a commander and a statesman of ancient Rome, whose name became a generic term for the title of emperor. He began his political career as a supporter of democratic reforms, because of his beliefs he had been in disgrace for some time. After becoming the governor of Gaul, Caesar demonstrated outstanding talent as a commander and a politician, he was able to conquer the vast territory occupied by modern France and Belgium with relatively small forces. In 49 BC, taking advantage of the support of the legions, loyal to him, Caesar launched a civil war, emerging the victor in it. After the war, Caesar took the top posts of the consul and great pontiff, becoming the dictator for life, concentrating all the powers in his hands. At the same time Rome nominally remained a republic, the all-powerful governor didn’t accept the royal title. However, a group of conspirators, believing that the republic should be restored, successfully attempted the life of the dictator. On the one hand, the extraordinary talents of Caesar should be paid tribute to, on the other hand — it is necessary to remember that the deeds of this controversial figure were mostly dictated by his desire for absolute power.
