Behaviourism
Background
This school emerged in the second half of the 20th century. The founder was American psychologist J. Watson (1878-1958). Behaviourism emerged in contradiction to the followers of Descartes and the structuralists who claimed that the phenomena of consciousness were psyche as such. At present cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy incorporates the discoveries of behaviourism and cognitive psychology.
The subject of research
Behaviourists proposed behaviour as the subject of research – the only accessible matter for immediate analysis. It was proposed to regard all that was not open to the observation (the phenomena of consciousness) to be a black box and the proposal was to study just external displays.
